Road Trip in Spain

HOWDY! I’m having a flu and we’re at Kuopio, just got backed from the Christmas market on the Main Marketplace, where we bought a wedding ring from Kultajousi. We’re also having a Christmas break from the gigs and the last one was maybe the biggest so far. But before that we have to travel a few weeks back when Wegster did let us know he’d be quitting the band. Right before The Independence Day he actually did start to threaten us about not playing in the remaining gigs if wouldn’t get paid and havin’ his own hotel rooms and so on. I called Andy Licks (from Scars Remind) and he immediately got excited to play with us during December. So we packed the car and I hopped train with Miia to Helsinki where my first stop was at Metsätalo Uni for a quick office meeting but soon I was walking to Skatta for our Eurohostel hanging there and made a quick stop at Skatta K-Market to pick up some beer and cheese potatos.

Walked back to On The Rocks 7pm and NiteRain was still doing their check. We got to do a shorter one and were ready right before the doors got open. Did hang there at the backstage and the intro by Bruce Buffer launched about 9.15pm. Great show, great audience and I actually fell down from the stage accidentally but everything was okay, did hook up with some fans for autographs and partied there until 2am. NiteRain guys weren’t that into drinking – maybe because we inconsiderately invite too many friends there to backstage, sorry for that our Norwegian friends! We gathered and continued beer sipping in Backstage, suddenly Miia vanished somewhere and they’d been talking with Ida just around the corner outside for long as we were tasting the free beers there inside with the boys. Sammy & Katri had fuckin’ walked all the way to Kallio but I had to have again a subway meal from Punavuori before fading out.

Next morning Mikko called and told that our music video was finally ready. Met the guys in front of Rocks and took Atte’s bass guitar with me and actually left it to the reception of our hotel next morning. Walked to Fafa’s for a pita and bought some snacks for a lazy night in our hotel room because we had to woke up 3am next morning. Had a long hot shower and walked to Main Station to catch a train to Airport and of course it was full of late Friday night party folk. Had again few champagne glasses and faded out in a plane and actually woke up right before arriving Malaga because some freakin’ oldtimers there behind us started to pick a fight and speak loudly because of all the drinks they already had before noon.

Walked straight to Gold Car Office and took a ride, Opel Astra hahaha and drove to Granada. Had a little kissing and cuddling stop (yeah that’s what I call it ;) there somewhere on the freeway  and tried to call Marjut but she didn’t answer so we picked her address from Miia’s father and stopped again before the town to buy some beer and snacks. Sat there in the sun and got a parking lot pretty quickly before arriving. Just like we expected, Marjut was been drinkin’ the whole night (and the morning) and actually woke up when she heard some Finnish talking there outside her bungalow. Soon we were chilling on stairs, smoking cigarettes and drinking cheap beer from a 1,5 litre glass bottle.

We climbed up over the town to watch the sunset and drink more. That’s where the first bottle broke and M threw up because having “a bad cigarette”, hahaha. After a quick stop in Mercadona we sat there in a dark bungalow, because the electricity didn’t work, smoked weed and headed to a bar called La Nuevo Bodega right at Calle Seti Meniem, around the corner of Calle Elvira, which is the narrow shopping street in town. Bought some beer and gotta few tapas’ before walking to Hotel Pablo’s Place Skybar near the Cathedral, can’t remember that well the place, you know. From rooftop party I called back Finland because the guys were hosting our music video premiere and album release evening in Winger. They’d been doing great and so did we but after walking back home, Marjut broke another glass bottle and there were actually glass in our noodle pot as well as in our boots. We just pour some detergent on the floor and faded out in 80cm bed all the three of us.

Next morning Miia was a bit sick but got up to celebrate my birthday tapas dinner in La Antigüalla, after a quickie beer in Los Buenos Chicos – a small rockbar with micro warmed tapas’ in the end of Elvira. Also bought a shalwar from the street, walked back Calle Pizarro Cenjor in Beiro sub-urban after a quick tour in city centre of Granada, Plaza Nueva, Calle Reyes Catolicos and Calle Gran Via De Colon. After another night in a small bed we packed our staff and drove to Madrid. Spanish freeways are always a pleasure to drive and the trip was over before it even did start.

We did find Hostal Madrid (on Calle De Esparteros near Sol metro station and the busiest Puerta Del Sol) fast but the parking hall nearby on Calle De Carretas was full so we had to drove all the way to Apertura Parking on Calle De La Esperanza in Lavapies, which is the best area of Madrid with all the alternative bars and shops, even better than the neighborhood of Plaza Dos De Mayo. Ate a fuckin’ royal dinner in Cantina Alhambra on Calle Victoria with for example a fried goat cheese blueberry tapas and headed to see the most notable marketplace in Spain – Plaza Mayor. It’s surrounded by some small shopping alleys and actually our hotel was pretty nearby. In the morning woke up early and did a little walking trip around the town.

First we catched Plaza De Villa on Calle Mayor and photographed the house of Lujanes’. In La Moreria hided a quiet Plaza De La Paja which was a former central marketplace before Mayor. Iglesia De San Andres was quite impressive and after that walked through Cava Alta, Barrio is actually one the oldest quarters in city. Calle De Toledo led to Calle De Atocha, near Plaza Santa Ana and Calle De Las Huertas where we ate again a tapas’ meal in a busy Casa Alberto – a tasty choco cake as a dessert in famous jazz bar Café Cenral. Lope De Vega also lived his life in this atmospheric area.

Museo Nacional Centro De Arte Reina Sofia was closed and Atocha Train Station full of crowd witnessing the tragical place of Madrid Terrorist Attacks so we walked through Real Jardin Botanico to Observatorio Astronomy University Area which are always my kind of intrests, haha. Parque De El Retiro was a peaceful and beautiful place before walked back Museo Nacional Del Prado and all the way to Monument Of Fallen Heroes of Spain Civil War. Headed to Gran Via which is maybe the most American street of Spain. Bocaito in a famous gay area Chueca was closed as well as Artemisa Vegetarian restaurant around the corner so booked a table to Las Tablas Flamenco Bar in Plaza De Espana next to the wonderful Palace of Madrid. The show was super great and the drinks were cold. Awesome!

Next morning drove along Spanish Eastern Highway to Valencia. Autunm turned basically back to Summer because it was way over 20 when we got in front of Pension Universal on Carrer de les Barques. Parked a car a bit further so had to drive over Alfonso El Magnagimo and Porta De La Mar to Parkside of Valencia and leave the car there. Later ate in Café & Tapas on 18. Walked along Carrer Colon and ended up in ateljee in front of Cathedral De Valencia. Plaza De La Virgen was still full of youngsters so marched to Torres De Serranos monument and all the way to Mercat De Colom Market Hall, would have been nice to stay there but my gf was still having a fever so slept well and got up pretty early. It was raining so walked through busy Mercat De Les Flors to Mercat Central for a few minutes. Narrow Carrer De Murillo led to a bigger Carrer De Guillem De Castro which we crossed to a walk in the park for Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias which is probably the most  beautiful water monument of art which I’ve ever seen! WOAH! Took a few photos and bought some snacks from Masymas Supermercat on Avinguda De La Plata and ate those in a small park in the corner of Carrer De Pere Alexaindre & Carrer de L’escultor Jose Capuz.

When finally got back to Finland, it was already 11pm because of the delayed flights of fuckin’ Norwegian. Luckily they let you do the check-inn through internet so we used my smart phone in the plane. Guys had trained with Andy Licks so concentrated on watchin’ a hockey match and getting enough rest. Woke up early and got to get ready for the show with no hurry. Played the set with the guys in Hiukka and did hit the Arena around 3pm. The catering was great and we climbed onstage 6:45pm precisely and played 45 minutes before Temple Balls, Santa Cruz, Battle Beast and finally Reckless Love. Got to see for example my cousin Pepe, Katy Pixx, Tiger L.A. with his brother and all the best guys in the audience. We did eat and drink there at the backstage and after Reckless did stop, we took a cab to Huikka. Met Atte finally in the Subway of Uusikatu – he had been drinkin’ with the crew of Arena and came with a car an hour after us. Good night!

Next day we almost missed his plane because my Mustang had been running out of battery after standing there for two weeks all alone. The morning after that my father came to help with the car and accidentally drove it to a pillar so the car is damaged now – but it’ll get fixed of course.

About our snowboarding trip… First we drove to Kuopio for a couple of days and did basically nothing but did get some rest, eventhough some drama with K getting too drunk we managed to get back home for my Christmas Party in Maikkulan Kartano and later in Superpark. It was okay but I looked forward to the week in Levi with my gf. Arrived the Winter Wonderland, Villa Hilla and snowboarded every day. Used the ski bus there and every night just sat in front of our fireplace. It’s our tradition to eat in Renna every time we’re first day skiing and that’s what we did now as well. Basically only the main slopes were open so had to figure out how to make the downs worth of coming. One of the night ones was probably the best of my life so far when it was blowing super hard and you could only see the stars… Came down right below the gondola lift. In some point I dropped my Samsung and it actually came down all the way the lift path, ended up on the substation down there, hah.

I was curious to see Jean Michel Jarre so bought the tickets to Nordis Helsinki. Also took a room from Fabian and ordered a lunch in Cock, got pastas. After eating and watching F1 Race in our suite, went for a little walk with wine bottles and some whiskey. Walked across Tähtitorninmäki, Tehtaankatu, Kaivopuisto, Eiran Ranta, Löyly Restaurant, Nosturi, Old Lepakko in Ruoholahti and Kaapelitehdas before taking a transport to Nordis finally. Gotta say man – Jarre’s show was maybe the best one I’ve seen so far with the electronic harps and Edward Snowden holograms! Though my throat was hurting a bit we walked back through Hesperianpuisto all the way to Fabianinkatu. Next morning after breakfast we headed the bar round which started from Teatteri. Edberg’s legendary Café, Kokomo and traditional Teerenpeli were all closed and Kappeli fully-crowded so had rum shots in Bryggeri and some snacks and beer in Kaisla before flying back home.

Wanted to test the Hai Long After Work Buffet but gotta say that it's probably the biggest fail in Oulu's food court. Just a few selections, old food and the "sushi buffet" with a couple of vege nigiris, aha. Had to walk to Antell Kirkkokatu for some tasty food like Strawberry Coffee & fresh smoothies. Chatted with Paaso a few words and picked then a bottle of Haddington House from Stockmann's Alko.

I did put my home studio up again and trained new drum beats as well as bass and guitar playing during our studio times, suddenly Juce called me and asked to join him for a few hours in Climbing Center Oulu. FUCK YEAH, that was fun. My abs, wrists and all the muscles were super sore about three days but it was fuckin’ totally worth it! We played a couple of acoustic shows before the studio. First one in Kempele. Smippe was already having wines and stuff in Uleåborg so he was smiling like a cookie when we supposed to start checkin’ in Karhunpesä. Nitro had broken his wrist so he couldn’t play. The place was packed when we started playing and the night went on with Hevi – an old biker – joining us for the rest of the night. We had invitations to Ilona so took a ride there and drank some more. Next show was again in Winger but we went home right after the place was closed because we had to hurry the studio next day. ‘

Took our equipment to Soundmix Studios and pushed play button. It’s always a pleasure to work with Mika Pohjola, so it was this time as well. We called each other – no matter if it’s day or night – and got a good package of songs. Wexx didn’t know how to play some bass lines so Sammy did that. Also Mika added some bad-ass synths to boost the songs even more. Usually Nitro and Mickey stayed there over nights to just chat with Mika and getting the songs mixed. At one night Atte and Jonna joined us, smoke a fat one in hour balcony and started to have some beer, had to stop because we supposed to be recording later so picked Nitro up and went again to Soundmix. That’s how you do it!

The guys from the office had put up a red wine and chocolate night so headed there straight from the studio. Santeri’s place is actually just around the corner, next to Tullikamari so we just sat there and drank gallons of wine with cheeses. Drove to Hiukkavaara to change the locks along the new red light bridge in Maikkula right after that. Recently I’ve been working with my inspiration and found some really good ways to speed that up:

Secret In Their Eyes (Probably one of the best crime films I’ve ever seen, also the best from Southern America Film Industry. Don’t watch that Hollywood bullshit remake of this!! It’s about a policeman investigating a raw murder of a young teacher and about her husband in grief. Touching, twisting and catching.)
Marko Lönnqvist’s Cannonball Diary (Fin: Elämäni Gangsterina is an authentic description about a youngster driving into the gangs and later in the motorcycle clubs, living in jet-sets like a rock star but realizing after a jail round that your life is mostly full of lies and the true brotherhood isn’t there anymore. Dramatic but still so freakin’ entertaining one!)

The Hateful Eight (Tarantino’s new western was criticized but as my opinion – without any reasons. Goes top 10 westerns for me and makes for example Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Madsen shine one more time. It counts on dialogue and those funny camera tricks as well as the soundtrack behind the fantastic scene. Maybe the best of 2016.)

The Way Way Back (A light comedy about a blended family going on vacation in a big house. Their shy kid has to make new friends so he gets hired in a water park and at the time their parents get drunk with a bad step dad cheating his mother. It’s a cliché but it’s kinda growing-up-story and a watchable one for example in hangovers. Retro-view-style filming makes this a bit better than it would be normally.)

Killer Joe (A father with his son decide to kill their bitch-mother and hire Joe to do it. They actually bite a finger of a devil because first of all the killer wants their little sister as a deposit for the job. It’s full of black comedy and great dialogue, that’s why I loved this. Also there are some Tarantino-like-blood-bath-scenes which raises the points even more. Modern day action film with a nice drama elements and goes for the top line of mine.)

Buffalo Springfield (The debut album with the same name, released 1966 December is everything 60’s should be… This one’s maybe folk rock but it’s the best music for driving and chilling – though winter or summer. Songs are well-recorded, though it’s been precisely 50 years now!! The second song Sit Down, I Think I Love You makes you smile for sure, no matter how you are atm… Love that album!)

Blood Father (Mel Gibson has got what it takes again to be an action star. In plot, his baby girl gets into drug business and is a marked one so she finds her just-out-of-the-jail-father who tries to stay clean but fuckin’ smashes the bad guys after his daughter. The best action film of 2016!)

Tango In The Night (Fleetwood Mac’s best album starts with an electric version of Big Love, it’s still great and also a bit unknown tracks like the album-name-song and Caroline catch the deep spirit of their era, music for midnights and chillers.)

Wolfmother (This Australian rock band is probably the best from the island after INXS and with their song New Moon Rising and on the wings of charismatic guitarist-singer Andrew Stocktale they remind me of early White Stripes with the flavors of 70’s psychedelic stars – the best choice for long motorbike road trips!)

Machine Gun Preacher (Gerald Butler does his best role in a road action film about a former inmate and biker and killer who finds God and starts to change his life with a good intentions. Well-made and unique atmosphere keeps you on the sofa until the end, really a good surprise from Netflix – FINALLY!)

Paul Brunton’s Hermit In Himalaya (Brunton is one of the best on the road -authors ever but this one is maybe his most unknown-one. Doesn’t matter, it’s all about enlightenment and getting to live alone with the mother nature. It begins in the middle of mountains, Brunton trying to find an ideal place for meditating and peace, runs all the way the techniques gettin’ to it.)

Carlos Castaneda’s Journey To Itxlan (Another mystic with even deeper stories that Brunton. Castaneda tells stories about Juan Matos, an old indian who’s having a young student for the drug plants like psilobine mushrooms and mescaline cactuses… They’re learning the techniques of surviving through the wheel of life with the yaqui-tribal, Castaned has been accused as a witch and liar but the cult lives on. However, the book is awesome!)

The Book Of Law (Red this Aleister Crowley’s book during our guitar and bass studio sessions in the Soundmix and found something interesting in it. A spirit named Alwaz dictated this to him. It contains three different chapters and it’s a sacred book of Thelema which kind of gets all the religions together and goes for meditation and ritual magic – that’s why it’s sometimes been a book for Satanism – also Ozzy sang about the book in his song “Mr. Crowley”. Worth of checking out.)

Eye In The Sky (Modern war film about new techniques used in the war against terrorism. It’s about a small village in Kenya getting in the middle of action and about Western Countries’ problems how to save civilian lives in the conflict zones. A little girl is spotted from the “eye in the sky” and they have to re-concider the operation all over again. This is mainly a flash from different characters and tries to catch the same spirit than for example in Spy Game – without really getting it!)

Uula Magga (Listened this Finnish artist during our mixing process at Soundmix, loved the story about this unique artist and his visual and musical visions which our kinda insane but still memorable. Treatment Period goes through the story of a mental asylum patient and also listened the whole production of the artist after Mika gave me some cd’s to listen.)

Metric (Synthetica is probably their best record so far and a track “Dreams So Real” should be in the list of best and the most atmospheric pop songs of 21st century for real. If you’re into syntwave like myself, this song is a must but there are also catchy pop songs (like for example “Lost Kitten”) with a guitars but also some darker moments with Carpenter-like synths and spooky background vocals.)

Burak Yeter’s Tuesday (They’ve reached the bottom this year with the new top hits but Burak Yeter’s Tuesday reminds me a good old days of electro and pop music getting along without any fuckin’ rap sessions or rubbish modern-techno-beats. The chorus is also hooking and if you’d have to mention a one good pop song of 2016, it would be this one!)

Downshifters (After Kimmo flopped with the new season totally, the same actors are loaded the same kind of series – with a better quality. It’s about Vatanen and Kuustonen getting really broke so they have to move to a sub-urban without any incomes after some highlight years in jetsets of Helsinki. It’s funny and goes after a hard day and with your meals. Like Salkkarit!)

In The Heart Of The Sea (If you’ve red Moby Dick, or though you haven’t – this one is a MUST. It’s an adventure of a ship crew trying to get home alive after getting involved with a huge white whale – Moby fuckin’ Dick! Better than Robinson Crusoe stories and so well filmed and produced!)

Too Late (It's a neo-noir film of five pieces of 20 minutes scenes that tell a story about a private invastigator searching for a killer a young stripper he's been in love with. The dialogue is probably the best written of all films ever and this one is most likely the best movie in Netflix right now. Takes an imbesille NOT to like this one - I'm a big fan of noirs and this one is all time one of the wildest ones, WATCH IT FUCKER!!)

Black Mass (Johnny Depp plays Whitey Bulger, a mafia boss going all the way the top of the crime family. Irish guy with the Irish friends gets into the grace of FBI and his old friend in the Bureau. Pretty typical mafia movie but better than average for sure. Interesting because of well-made plot and filming. Goes into top10 of 2016 and totally worth it.)

And for the end, MERRY FUCKIN' X-MAS, I'll add a Finnish blog by my good friend Mikael Huikari.. He did recently wrote a cool story about GHS and you should also visit his site every Sunday, that's a day for a weekly update, SEE YA --> mikaelhuikari.com

The story goes like this:
PART 1. MUSTANG

– Rokkia, snoukkaamista, surffaamista – hemmetti – kaikkea siistiä, saatana.
– Minulla ei tulisi ensimmäisenä mieleen surffaaminen teidän biiseistä.
– Ootko sä koskaan surffannut?

Hymähdän myöntäen, etten ole. Vinny jatkaa:

– Mä oon saanut tatsia biisien kirjoittamiseen surffauksesta. Ne on ehkä enemmän sellaisia vitun isoja aaltoja, voiks kuvitella, oot venannut hetken ja SIT SE TULEE. Sä ratsastat siellä surffilaudan päällä, ja se on siinä-ja-siinä kaadutko, vai hoidatko homman kauniisti kotiin.
– Vaaran tunne?
– No just se, perkele!

Samassa liikennevalot vaihtuvat keltaisiksi, Vinny painaa lisää kaasua. Tietenkin.

– Mikä sun lempikirja on?
– Ai mun lempikirja? Ehdottomasti Dorian Grayn muotokuva.
Oscar Wilde? ”Pystyn vastustamaan kaikkea muita paitsi kiusauksia.”

PART 2. TREENIKÄMPÄT, MEET THE FUCKIN’ CREW

Matt Nitro istuu minua vastapäätä; raaputtaa vodkapullon etikettiä, kerää silpun, heittää sen sitten roskiin puolihuolimattomasti. Tiger L.A. virittelee kitaraansa, Wegster bassoaan. Jay Mickey ja Vinny jutustelevat pihalla bändin edellislevyn tuottaneen Timmy Loverin kanssa äänekkäästi höröttäen, oluttölkkejä sihautellen. Hitto, mitä porukkaa – nämähän taitavat oikeasti elää, kuten rokkaavat! Minä olen tullut tänne tekemään juttua, joten hetken kuluttua tiedustelen Matt Nitrolta, mikä musiikkibisneksessä on tällä hetkellä eniten perseestä.

– Kertakäyttökulttuuri on vienyt ihmiseltä itseltään kokemuksen nauttia levystä kokonaisuutena?
– Just näin. Esimerkiksi levyn kansitaide, kappaleiden muodostama kokonaisuus, on jäänyt täysin digiaikakauden yksittäisten raitojen jalkoihin. Ihmiset eivät enää osta musiikkiaan fyysisenä kopiona tai kerkeä nykyajan kiireelliseltä mothafuckin’ lifestyleltä istumaan alas aidosti kuuntelemaan.

PART 3. WINGER BAR, OULU

Groupie High Schoolin uusin albumi High-Class Addiction on otettu hyvin vastaan – miksipä ei, jos lyriikoissa meininki on tämänkaltaista:

I’ve got addiction to all that shines
I’ve got addiction to blurred lines
There’s a reason to stay alive
We call it High-Class Addiction, baby!

– Soitetaan koko ajan parempia keikkoja.

Moneyshot situation. Muistan solistin surffivertauksen aiemmin päivältä; epäilemättä hän on saanut nopeasti koko yleisön surffilautansa päälle. Uhkaa, pelkoa sekä säkenöiviä tulipalloja ilmassa. Vaaraa. Bändi rokkaa kuin tuomiopäivän koittaessa – havaitsen, kuinka tyttö mustissa käsineissään eturivissä ristii sormensa rukoukseen. Äkkiä tunnen nousevani ilmaan.
